The Dental Way

General Dentistry & Orthodontics located in Bergenfield, NJ

Whether by tooth decay, periodontal disease, or facial injury, millions of Americans lose their teeth every year. In fact, according to the American Dental Association, the average adult between ages 20-64 may have up to three decayed or missing teeth. Tooth loss not only destroys your dazzling smile but can rob you of your ability to properly chew and digest your food. Until about 25 years ago, the only treatments available for missing teeth were cumbersome dentures and difficult dental bridges. At The Dental Way in Bergenfield, New Jersey, however, the team use the latest in tooth replacement technology: the dental implants. If you’d like to learn more about how dental implants can give you back your winning smile, call The Dental Way now, or book your appointment online.

Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Simply put, dental implants are replacement roots for your teeth. Usually made out of titanium, dental implants are surgically implanted under your gums, fusing with your jawbone to act as an anchor for artificial teeth. Dental implants can also be used to affix dentures and dental bridges in place, preventing them from sliding around your mouth while chewing or speaking.

How do dental implants work?

The American Dental Association approves of two types of dental implants: endosteal implants and subperiosteal implants.

Endosteal implants get surgically implanted right into your jawbone, where they act as an anchor for the titanium posts that will hold your artificial teeth. Once your gums and jawbone have healed from this initial surgery, your doctor will then order a second surgery to attach the posts to the implant, allowing your doctor to fasten new, artificial teeth to the posts. These artificial teeth may be attached individually to each post, or the posts may be used to secure dentures or dental bridges.

Subperiosteal implants are similar to endosteal implants, but come with their posts already attached. They sit on top of your jawbone and will fuse with it as you heal from your surgery. Once your gums heal, your doctor can then mount your new, artificial teeth upon the posts.

What are the benefits of dental implants?

Dental implants have many advantages over traditional dentures and dental bridges. These include:

  • Better appearance because implants look just like natural teeth

  • Increased comfort because implants stay in place

  • Improved speech because implants are in the same positions as your natural teeth

  • Effortless eating because implants can handle the same foods as natural teeth
  • Better oral health because implants allow you to brush and floss normally

When you get dental implants, you can have a replacement for missing or damaged teeth that last a lifetime with proper care.

What is the rate of success for dental implants?

Dental implants are safe, effective, and permanent. The success of your dental implants may vary depending upon their location along the jaw, but overall, dental implants have a success rate of over 98%.

Who can receive dental implants?

For the most part, dental implants are safe enough for anyone who can undergo a regular dental extraction or oral surgery. Recipients of dental implants should be committed to good oral hygiene and regular visits to the dentist. Heavy smokers, patients suffering from untreated diabetes or heart conditions, and patients who have undergone radiation therapy will need to be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
